“Will Being Green Mean I’m Freed?”: Thoughts From A Stanford Undergraduate on The Green Movement

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Matthew
- Matthew J Miller

Note: I am an environmental justice advocate so this is certainly not a break from the environmental movement. It is my realization that I have a responsibility to do some cultural brokering. I intend to offer alternative and relevant perspectives, not to divide. Consider this an acknowledgment of the socioeconomic, racial, political, psychological, and even spiritual challenges that need to be hurdled and taken head on in striving to “green” communities, oppressed and liberated alike. Since this piece is slightly creative, take the personal pronouns as me speaking from a group perspective informed and inspired by personal accounts and my ethnic studies.

I get it: the world is crumbling. Boo-hoo. Did you think my world was in tact before? Oh yes, this is going to be one of those cups of tea. I hope you like it hot. (more…)

map of recent earthquake in chile

Whoa! This year the earthquake’s ain’t no joke. A 8.8 Magnitude hit Chile this morning killing at least 16 people but the death toll is still rising. The epicenter of the earthquake was just 70 miles from Concepcion, Chile’s second-largest city. In Santiago, the capital, telephone and power outages made it difficult to determine the extent of the damage.

There has been an overwhelming amount of large magnitude earthquakes this year especially in the Caribbean and Latin America. The most damaging of course was the earthquake in Haiti in January that killed over 200,000 people.

You can read more about today’s earthquake in Chile by following the link to the washington post below.

A Return to Glory and A Bit of Irony!- Van Jones Receives NAACP Presidents Image Award « Green Justice!!!

van standing on a solar roof

Post Submitted by Kirin Kennedy

The NAACP, the oldest and most powerful Civil Rights organization in America, is going to honor former Green Czar Van Jones with an Image Award. The NAACP is stating that he is a pioneer in the “green collar jobs” with movement. This well deserved award is so ironic as roughly 6 months ago, Fox News Anchor Glenn Beck single handedly caused a furor within the conservative right community that led to Mr. Jones resignation. Beck took a series of Van’s remarks out of context and blew them out of proportion, leading to unwanted negative attention on the newly appoint ‘czar’ on green economy. Where the irony lies is that the NAACP Image Awards are aired each year by the Fox Network, and is a prestigious awards show that honors the achievements of people of color and their allies for advancements in the areas, of Music, Movies, Social justice and Civil rights!!! I am sure that Glenn Beck sat in astonishment as the NAACP announced that Van Jones would be receiving the Presidents Award….

NAACP Image awards air tonight on Fox To read the full post click on the link below!
